Reasoning Fallacies

Reasoning fallacies are systematic errors in logic that make an argument appear convincing even though its reasoning is flawed. They occur when conclusions are drawn from weak evidence, irrelevant information, false assumptions, or invalid logical connections. Some reasoning fallacies arise from underlying cognitive biases, while others result from mistakes in argument construction itself. For a Mindgleian Inquiry Architect, recognising reasoning fallacies is essential because persuasive arguments are not always valid arguments. By learning to identify fallacies such as hasty generalisation, false dilemma, straw man, ad hominem, slippery slope, false cause, and circular reasoning, learners become better equipped to evaluate claims objectively, challenge weak arguments fairly, and construct conclusions that are supported by sound reasoning and robust evidence rather than faulty logic.

  • Am I clearly stating my claim?
  • What evidence genuinely supports my claim?
  • Are my reasons logically connected to my conclusion?
  • Have I explained why my evidence supports my claim?
  • What hidden assumptions am I making?
  • Have I provided a clear warrant linking my evidence to my conclusion?
  • Is my argument based on facts rather than opinions?
  • Have I distinguished between correlation and causation?
  • Could there be alternative explanations for the evidence?
  • Have I considered evidence that challenges my position?
  • Am I representing opposing viewpoints fairly and accurately?
  • Have I avoided attacking the person instead of the argument?
  • Am I addressing the actual issue rather than introducing irrelevant information?
  • Have I avoided reducing a complex issue to only two choices?
  • Is my conclusion based on sufficient and representative evidence?
  • Am I relying on a single anecdote instead of broader evidence?
  • Am I accepting this claim because it is popular, or because it is well supported?
  • Am I relying on authority instead of evidence?
  • Have I checked whether my reasoning is circular?
  • Am I assuming causation simply because one event followed another?
  • Have I avoided making exaggerated predictions without evidence?
  • Are the key terms in my argument clearly defined and used consistently?
  • Does my conclusion logically follow from my premises?
  • Have I evaluated both the strengths and limitations of my argument?
  • What evidence, if discovered, would make me reconsider my conclusion?
  • Have I built my argument to discover the truth, or merely to defend my opinion?
  • Is every step of my reasoning transparent and justifiable?
  • Would an objective reader find my reasoning convincing?
  • Have I revised my argument after critically evaluating it?
  • Does my final conclusion reflect the strongest available evidence rather than my initial beliefs?

While cognitive biases influence what we tend to believe, reasoning determines how we connect ideas, interpret evidence, and arrive at conclusions. This toolkit equips learners to recognise common reasoning fallacies, distinguish valid arguments from flawed ones, evaluate claims critically, and justify conclusions using sound logic rather than intuition or emotion. Learners develop the habit of asking whether a conclusion genuinely follows from the evidence or whether errors in reasoning have quietly weakened the inquiry. By strengthening logical thinking, the Reasoning Toolkit enables students to build clearer arguments, make better decisions, and construct knowledge with greater precision, consistency, and intellectual integrity.
