Why minds go wrong…

Learners discover that perception and judgment are naturally biased.

Inquiry is not influenced only by the questions we ask, but also by the invisible thinking habits we bring into the process. Long before learners begin evaluating evidence or constructing knowledge, their minds naturally make assumptions, notice some information while overlooking others, prefer familiar ideas, and interpret reality through prior experiences and beliefs. These mental shortcuts, known as inquiry biases, are normal features of human thinking. While they help us make quick decisions in everyday life, they can also distort curiosity, narrow our perspective, and weaken the quality of inquiry if left unrecognised.

For a Mindgleian, becoming a better inquirer is not about eliminating these biases—because no human mind is completely free from them—but about becoming aware of when they might be influencing our thinking. By recognising these common thinking traps, learners become more reflective, open-minded, evidence-conscious, and intellectually honest. They learn to pause before accepting the first answer, actively seek alternative perspectives, question their own assumptions, and ensure that their inquiry is guided by curiosity rather than by unconscious bias. In doing so, they move one step closer to constructing knowledge that is thoughtful, balanced, and better aligned with reality.

Some reasoning fallacies arise directly from underlying cognitive biases, meaning that biased thinking often leads to faulty reasoning. While cognitive biases distort how we perceive and interpret information, reasoning fallacies are flawed patterns of logic that often emerge from those underlying biases.

This shows that before inquiry truly begins, learners must consciously choose objectivity over bias. At every arrow, there is potential for bias. The role of a Mindgleian Inquirer is to pause, recognise those thinking traps, and consciously return to evidence, multiple perspectives, and reflection before moving forward. This is how learners progressively align their knowledge claims more closely with reality.

When Does Bias Arise in Inquiry?

Bias can emerge at any stage of inquiry whenever our judgement is influenced by personal beliefs, emotions, assumptions, experiences, social influences, or preferences instead of being guided by balanced evidence and open-minded thinking. Bias is a natural part of human cognition—it is not a sign of poor intelligence. Becoming aware of these biases allows learners to question their own thinking and conduct more thoughtful, fair, and evidence-conscious inquiry.
